Final Report - HEDGEHEP (The cellular origins of hepatocellular carcinoma: Possible role for hedgehog pathway)

Project ID: 208747
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

The incidence of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is constantly increasing over last decades. The disease is resistant to conventional cancer treatments, thus new therapeutic approaches are vitally needed.

Therefore, the HEDGEHEP project, which was funded under the European Commission's (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), aimed to investigate the involvement of the hedgehog (HH) pathway in the liver cancer, taking advantage of transgenic animal models.

This final publishable summary presents the project findings which, along with the results of other groups, led to the establishment of a new possible model for the stem cell hierarchy in adult tissues. Moreover, it refers to the impact of HEDGEHEP in the genetics' sector and to the interest expressed by the general public.
