Final Report - HYMAR (High efficiency hybrid drive trains for small and medium sized marine craft)

This is the final report of the HYMAR project which received funding under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The objectives of HYMAR included zero emissions to air and zero external noise and vibration in port and a reduction of overall fuel consumption by 30%, tending to > 90 % on applications such as long distance sailing boats using regenerative techniques. A new ISO standard for high voltage DC propulsion systems and comprehensive energy management were also targets.

Initially, the report describes the context in which the project took place, namely the significant social and economic aspects that the maritime industry represents for Europe. It continues by describing the technical aspects of hybrid drive systems for ships. In particular this includes the development of a high efficiency, low speed, torque following propeller Rim drive propulsor using an embedded permanent magnet DC (PMDC) motor and contra rotating blades Load following, dynamic PMDC motor and generator controllers high efficiency DC to DC converters high efficiency AC to high voltage DC multi output battery charger Control algorithms for key components. The report concludes by stating that final deliverables will be a validated hybrid drive system for small craft, a design tool, critical new components including a new propeller, and contributions to NMEA and ISO standards.
