Final Report - CARBPOL (Investigating the role of the carbon cycle on the environmental fate of semivolatile organic pollutants)

Project ID: 220916
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

This is the final report of the CARBPOL project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project investigated the mechanisms which underpin the relationship between environmental fate and the occurrence of anthropogenic chemical pollutants and natural biogeochemical cycles. It focused in particular on the carbon cycle and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The relationship between organic matter degradation and the release of hydrophobic chemicals into water or air was assessed. One project goal was to ensure that the international research community is informed about the proposed limit/ban on POPs production. CARBPOL researched the relationship between POP fate and the biogeochemical drivers controlling incorporation and re-emission from environmental reservoirs.

The topics studied in CARBPOL are of growing interest for the international research community. It is hoped that the scientific literature produced will be an important contribution to future research developments in this field.
