Final Report - MIGBTB (Molecular mechanisms of germ cell migration across the mammalian blood-testis barrier)

This is the final report of the MIGBTB project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project investigated the mechanism of germ cell migration during early postnatal testicular development and active migration of spermatocytes through blood-testis-barrier (BTB) and the machinery facilitating this process. The testicular phenotype was analysed in the coxsackie virus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) conditional knock-out phase (cKO) in mice, during the early postnatal period and in adult mice. Also analysed was the dynamics of BTB in the absence of CAR, and CAR’s interacting partner in the testis.
%MIGBTB found that the CAR has no direct role in germ cell migration during the early postnatal period and in subsequent spermatogenesis. Project results indicate that any treatment plan for early pubertal boys should be drawn up cautiously to avoid damaging BTB and future fertility.
