Final Report - MAGMA (Mass transfer of metals and sulfur between mafic silicate melts and volatiles: an interdisciplinary approach)

This is the final report of the MAGMA project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). It aimed to assess the significance of mafic to intermediate magmas in the formation of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits of Au and Cu. Such deposits are typically formed from a volatile phase exsolving from a rising, cooling and crystallising silicate melt. MAGMA focused on S and Cl distribution between andesite melts and magmatic volatiles in order to predict the composition of magmatic volatiles in upper crustal magma chambers.

Calculations show that, by degassing, Au can be extracted very efficiently from mafic to intermediate magmas, but magmatic volatiles are not as efficient in extracting Cu from such magmas. Industry relies on the availability of various metals and low-priced commodities. Project results can be used to increase the efficiency of exploring magmatic-hydrothermal Au and Cu ore deposits.
