Final Report - THREADS (Textile and Hair proteomics: Reexamination of European wool from Archaeological Deposits)

Project ID: 236425
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

This is the final report of the THREADS project, funded under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project aimed to develop new proteomics-based tools to study ancient wools. In an effort to better understand their function in historic burials, three experimental sites were used: Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Associated processing and dyeing procedures were analysed by assessing the levels of oxidation. Medieval archaeological samples, from York and Newcastle (UK), and Iceland, dated between the 9th and 15th century were analysed in order to understand the degradation and preservation processes.

The results of this project present an evaluation of fibre survival in different archaeological contexts, characterise and identify markers of degradation, and propose strategies for the evaluation of fibre ageing and conservation of ancient artefacts.
