The aim of this research is to study a sensor capable of detecting surface defects on hot slabs immediately after they leave the continuous caster. The proposed solution uses ultrasonic waves propagating along the product's surface (Rayleigh waves), which are generated and detected without contact by electromagnetic means (EMA method). The mathematical model of the conversion of an electromagnetic wave into an ultrasonic wave and vice versa was studied. The technological problem of the realisation of such a sensor was analysed and a solution using silicon nitride ceramics is presented. The knowledge acquired makes it possible to envisage with confidence the construction of a prototype sensor for the on-line detection of surface defects on hot products.
