Thermomechanical treatments, such as a controlled rolling process (alone or followed by an accelerated cooling treatment) in the manufacture of high thickness plates, are not yet fully acceptable to steel consumers. This is due to concern with the possible occurrence of inhomogeneous structures at mid-thickness in such plates, which could alter the mechanical properties, especially those required under low temperature conditions. In this context, the research aimed to investigate the values of thermal and deformation gradients which occur during the rolling process, in order to quantify inhomogeneity in the microstructure and the influence of this on mechanical properties, especially cleavage strength.
