The initiative for this research programme was taken as it appeared that too great a percentage of material at the final quality control had to be re-routed, because of insufficient internal cleanliness. Inspection showed that in a majority of these cases oxide inclusions were involved. Normal slab routine control with sulphur prints is not specific towards oxides and shows no results at all when elements like Ti are added to the steel. Also, the results are influenced by the sulphur content. The present report compares the results of the 4-year programme with its initial objectives. These were to develop a system with which a fast assessment of the concentration and type of oxide inclusions in continuous cast slabs or hot rolled coils is made possible, and to use the information obtained with this system as feedback for the production process and to select material according to the requirements of the customers.
