The analysis of the data from 14 arc furnaces has led to the setting up of an equation for the calculation of the specific electric energy consumption. This equation has been used to determine the most economic electric operating point during melting. A control of the voltage steps has been developed for the start of the melting process. The components of arc reactance generated by the non-linear and the time-variant behaviour of the arcs were investigated in detail by theoretical calculations and by measurements at five arc furnaces. An equation has been set up which defines the corrleation between arc reactance and arc resistance as well as the reduction of arc reactance with the advance of melting time. The performance-decreasing effect of the arcs on electrical quantities is more accurately described in this way than previously. The time-dependent factor of arc reactance has been statistically analysed, in order to determine its behaviour for the selective asymmetric control of the electrical quantities at the end of the melting process.
