The target of the work was a better lining life of steel ladles using new refractory materials and lining techniques. This report deals only with high alumina (andalusite and bauxite) and spinel materials. Basic materials for ladles were not a part of this research programme. Laboratory and plant trials are also discussed. The development of a hot crushing strength machine has shown that it is possible to measure up to 1700 C. The results are discussed concerning values of fired and unfired bricks and gas purging sets (well block and purge plug). Plant trials have been done with andalusite, bauxite and spinel materials lining wall, slag zone and bottom. For wall lining a comparison using different lining techniques has been carried out. The results show clearly that the casting technique gives a better lining life in comparison with slinging techniques or using bricks in the ladle wall.
