An automatic control system has been developed for calculating rolling pass schedule and controlling strip flatness on the Sendzimir rolling mill for stainless steel of ILVA Terni Laminati Piani Speciali Works.
This system includes an automatic flatness control (AFC), performed by two stressometric rolls installed on the entry and exit sides of the mill stand. A closed loop control, based on the online strip flatness measurements, adjusts the backup roll camber (AS-U roll) and the first intermediate tapered rolls position, so as to obtain the desired final strip flatness characteristics. In order to improve the performances of the AFC system, an automatic rolling schedule calculation, for presetting the mill, has been developed so as to optimize the reducton distribution among all the passes, regarding both plant productivity and final strip quality (flatness and surface characteristics).
