Thermal control on a hot strip mill consists in controlling the thermal evolution of the product both in the rolling and the width directions, and it gives the strip its metallurgical properties. This report deals with thermal evolution along the process line of temperature distribution in the width of the strip. Thus we have studied the influence of thermal profile on homogeneity of metallurgical properties and on flatness evolution during cooling of the strip. Moreover, we have studied the influence of operating gears in order to control thermal profile, such as edge reheating and edge sealing during water cooling. Moreover, we have developed a thermal model in the width and thickness directions from the furnace to the coiler in order to predict the evolution of the thermal profils, and to study the influence of the process parameters. Some of them appeared to be very important:
the heating profile in the furnace;
the heat radiation phase at the roughing mill;
the higher cooling rate of the edges during water cooling. g.
