In July 1989, the European Commission funded a consortium of six laboratories to investigate control of perception in a continuously operating vision system. This book reports on the development of this system and the research which the system makes possible in control of a real-time vision system. It integrated a 12-axis robotic stereo camera head mounted on a mobile robot, dedicated computer boards and a distributed system for image description. The distribution system includes independent modules for 2D tracking and description, 3D reconstruction, object recognition, and control. The presentation is organised in five parts which reflect the components developed for the resulting experimental test-bed system.
