Groundwater is an important drinking water source in Europe. In areas composed of carbonate rocks, groundwater frequently flows through conduits and caves enlarged by dissolution processes. The European initiative COST action 65 has focused on hydrogeological aspects of groundwater protection in karst areas. The guidelines presented in this document provide a synopsis of the results for general readership.
