This report deals with studies that were carried out, concerning the cutting of contaminated, large diameter pipes from the cooling system of the G(2) and G(3) reactors, located at the Marcoule nuclear centre (France). Trials were conducted, with and without cutting the pipe, using different explosives in different forms. The secondary effects of the explosion on the internal contamination level were also investigated. The fuses that were used during these operations are presented in the report, that especially points out the geometry of the cutting shaped (hollow) charges and the explosives used. Because of the handling and utilization of explosives in a closed environment, many equipments were designed: a metal contaminment device; a test stand, immobilizing the pipe vertically; a ventilation system; and metallic door, isolating the test cell from the adjoining rooms. Concerning the demontaminating tests, the study considers the decontaminating factors, the width of the decontaminated internal zone and the pollution generated on the environment. Concerning the cutting shots, the report analyses the effects on the quality of the cut, on the decontamination effectivness and on the environmental pollution.
