This report gives the anticipated requirements for mechanisms to carry out in-service inspection and repair on existing and proposed liquid metal fast breeder reactors (LMFBR). Remotely controlled transport mechanisms are required to carry inspection and repair packages; the condition in which the transport mechanisms will operate are dependent on the plant region and the reactor state. This study has concentrated on mechanisms for use within the primary vessels; these would be inserted through the roof into sodium gas space, or into sodium. As this review has been directed at a generalized LMFBR deign, only general conclusions can be made. Several transport mechanisms used in gas, in gas-cooled reactors, and in hot cells and reprocessing plants, have potential in the normal LMFBR gas spaces; there appears to be little available at present for use within the small passages of a LMFBR roof space.
