  • Development of a predictive maintenance technique for complex equipment of variable weight and high dynamic loading such as the finishing block of a wire rod mill


After investigating the influence of good operating of the different strategic components (like the finishing block of the wire rod mill) on the productivity and on the costs of the mill, it is necessary to identify the condition of these components to deliver useful information to the production and maintenance departments. The following advanced technologies were applied: calculating methods for the dynamical behaviour of rotating machinery; vibration analysis on rotating machinery to identify approaching problems; a monitoring of the friction bearings with temperature detectors was developed and applied to the lubrification system of the finishing block. Results are presented in this report. These new tools may be applied to rolling equipment in general, and more specifically to the finishing block of a wire rod mill, in view of its character as a high speed industrial machine. The new aspect of this research consists of the application of predictive maintenance to complex machinery with variable loads and speeds.
