The preparation of cereal grain film-coated with 4 insecticides (3 organophosphorous and 1 pyrethroid) is described. Untreated cereal grain was oven-dried at 100 C for 48 hours in order to reduce the moisture content to below 3%. This was then film-coated with an aqueous insecticide solution containing a non-ionic wetter, yielding materials with target contents of 100 mg per kg and 20 to 25 mg per kg for each insecticide. Nine batches of material were prepared at each treatment level and portions (25 g) of treated grain were packaged in aluminium sachets which were flushed with nitrogen before being heat sealed.
Stability studies conducted on the packaged materials at -15 C to +40 C revealed marked pesticide losses at all temperatures above -15 C. This was particularly noticeable for the more volatile compounds. The insecticides were found to be stable for several days in the presence of dry ice.
The treated cereal grain was received by 29 laboratories. In the preliminary work the majority of laboratories achieved the performance criteria set in the first intercomparison of dilute insecticide solutions. Some laboratories failed to demonstrate acceptable linearity of detector response, despite being able to chose their own calibration range.
Seventeen laboratories macerated the grain before extraction, while 8 laboratories extracted the whole grain. A variety of extraction solvents were used. Clean up procedures varied from none, to partitioning, with gel permeation chromatography and solid phase extraction. The overall mean insecticide contents found in the intercomparison were close to the calculated values. The chlorpyrifos-methyl and pirimiphos-methyl contents were lower than calculated due to pesticide losses during the film coating process. Grain maceration was found to have a significant effect (P=0.05) on permethrin results at the low level.
