The present work corresponds to an extension of the experimental studies carried out during 1989 and 1990 within the framework of the project entitled Advanced design and operation of municipal waste water treatment plants. This extension was made after the Bilbao Water Authorities decided that the planned biological treatment plant in Galindo would have to produce an efficient nitrification of the waste water during the warm period of the year in order to recover the aquatic life in the estuary of the river Nervion. The conventional processes such as that of predenitrication-nitrification (D-N) have, basically, two disadvantages: they do not prevent filamentous microorganism bulking efficiently, and they require high internal recirculation ratios. Processes which take into account the regeneration of the recirculated sludge and the incorporation of anoxic selectors (R-D-N type processes) alleviate these problems. This report presents on evaluation in a pilot plant of the performance of these types of process when treating the Bilbao waste waters. The results were used to calibrate the IAWPRC model No 1 so as to facilitate the design of the full scale plant through computer simulations.
