Service Communautaire d'Information sur la Recherche et le Développement - CORDIS

This project aims at evaluating the effectiveness of remote equipment in the decommissioning of plutonium plants, with a view to minimizing dose uptake to operators. This report covers studies, inactive trials and testing and evaluation of active operations. The selected remote equipment is based on the use of teleoperated manipulator arms, deployed by a hydraulic machine. Plasma arc torch cutting, supplemented by grinding tools, provide a comprehensive size reduction system developed during the trials. The use of the system is evaluated, together with an assessment of costs and dose uptake. Finally, some conclusions and recommendations are made, in particular the need to establish the precise functionality of the equipment, the value of trials for development and training, and comments on effectiveness of remote methods.
