This report provides information on AL:PE 2 which is a joint project who's purpose is to improve understanding of remote mountain lake ecosystems and to determine their use as early response indicators of trends in atmospheric pollution and climate change. The main aims of the AL:PE project are to: understand the ecosystems of remote mountain lakes and their response to varying levels of acid deposition; assess the importance of other long range transported air pollutants (eg trace metals, polychlorinate biphenols (PCBs) in mountain lake ecosystems; identify unpolluted remote lakes within Europe that can be used as reference sites for studies of climate change.
