After four years of research and development, carried out under the auspices of the European Commission, the atomic energy Commissariat's waste confinement service (CEA/SCD) has perfected a system for fusion of the incinerated ashes of contaminated alpha waste, which is both simple and effective.
The vitrification procedure developed by the CEA/SCD is a continuous process in a cooled-wall cold crucible, using microwaves as a means of heating. A prototype, functioning in single mode at 915 MHz with 60 kW power, has been constructed and tested at Marcoule. Debits of fusion of 10 kg/hour have been obtained with the test ash-glass. The liquid obtained is very fluid and the final glass is very well defined. The leaching tests of the glass are highly satisfactory.
