This volume is the final report of the POLINAT project (1994-1996). POLINAT is a follow-up project of AERONOX (1992-1994) which was supported by the Environment Research Programme in order to contribute to a better understanding of the atmospheric effects of emissions in subsonic aircraft, aiming more specifically to investigate the importance of the NO(x) emissions on the ozone formation in the upper troposphere. The POLINAT project aims to determine the distribution and transformation of pollutants emitted from aircraft in the North Atlantic flight corridor. This report describes the results of the two subprojects, measurements and modelling. A summary is presented indicating also the gaps of knowledge requiring further investigations, which are addressed in POLINAT II. It is expected that the results obtained will facilitate the improvement of the estimates from models on the increase of ozone in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere and thereby provide better values of the corresponding changes on climate parameters.
