This project was initiated to evaluate the impact that the future evolution of the environment might have on the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes in Spain. To evaluate the level of safety of a high-level radioactive waste repository it is necessary to determine how future climate changes will affect the performance of the repository. the magnitude and likelihood of these changes can be inferred from the study of past climates.
The study was divided into five different tasks. The first four deal with the acquisition of past climate and environmental information on two different time scales: the last two million years and the last thousand years. The fifth deals with the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction and simulation of future evolution scenarios in a generic site. This report summarizes the work accomplished from May 91 to May 95 and it has been broken down into two main sections: A first section with an executive summary where the objectives and scope, work programme, results obtained and overall conclusions of the project are presented. A second section, where a summary of the individual tasks, developed by the different research groups is described. The report ends with a list of task reports written in Spanish or French during the project, which are available on request.
