  • El Berrocal project: Characterization and validation of natural radionuclide migration processes under real conditions on the fissured granitic environment


The El Berrocal was concerned with the development of methodologies, tools and equipment for the characterization of potential repository sites for high-level radioactive wastes. The primary scientific objective of the study was the investigation and characterization of natural radionuclide migration processes in fractured crystalline rock. The project, conceived as a natural analogue study, had the ultimate purpose of providing information to support performance assessment. The work undertaken included a series of interrelated activities that ranged from the construction of geological and structural models at both regional and local scales, for defining the geometry of the system, to the characterization of the detailed geochemical processes controlling the mobilization and retention of uranium and other trace elements at the site. The reports from the project have been divided into 17 topical reports, six task group reports and three summary reports. The six task group reports are published in this volume and cover the following topics: structural geology, hydrogeology, in situ tracer tests, lithogeochemistry and trace element mobility.
