The allotropic phase transformation of austenite to its transformation products plays a very important role in the processing of steel slabs to hot rolled coils. To control the final mechanical properties of the hot rolled strip, it is essential to control the phase transformation on the run-out table of the hot strip mill. In this research a method has been developed which enables the study of the cooling process directly. After extensive laboratory and factory test, three temperature measuring devices containing fibre pyrometers were mounted in the wet section of the run-out table cooling. The surface temperature of the passing hot rolled strip can be measured with a certain degree of accuracy depending on the surface condition and the accuracy of the preset emission coefficient of the hot rolled strip. This method has been developed and tested, although there still exist some problems with respect to the accuracy of the temperature measurements which are related to the change in surface condition of the strip. However, in principle, the temperature of the strip can be measured with an accuracy of +/-15 C. The accuracy of the temperature measurement could probably be increased using dual-wave or ratio pyrometers.
