The aim of this activity was to devise an antioxidative coating for steel slabs which have to be heated, making use of by-products of the steel industry, and to test their effectiveness by means of laboratory and industrial experiments. The coatings used, based on blast furnace slags and ferrous recovery material, selected from the laboratory trial have confirmed, on industrial slabs, the possibility to reduce the iron loss by 35% to 45%. with respect not covered slabs. Furthermore, the applicability tests on industrial slabs have demonstrated that the coatings remain adherent after very hard stresses due to the slab movement. On the surfaces of the hot rolled strips from the coated slabs, no defects due to the coatings were observed.
