Recently the emphasis has been on the conversion of discontinuous processes, based on innovative coating technologies such as physical or chemical vapour deposition, into continuous ones. In this regard the physical vapour deposition (PVD) utilizing the electron gun has been found to be the most promising technology. Therefore it was developed as an electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) apparatus capable of simulating the PVD processes in a continuous mode. The design of this apparatus is such that it can be easily integrated, as a deposition station, into a pilot plant with continuous strip travel. Coatings of Al(2)O(3), Cr, Cr(2)O(3), SiO(2), TiN, TiNO and TiCNO were obtained on stainless steel substrates, utilizing the above apparatus. The primary objectives was that of enhancing surface properties such as the corrosion resistance, thermal barrier, and aesthetic appeal of stainless steel strips. The characterization results indicated that these properties can be improved with appropriate coatings by the EB-PVD technology.
