The COST Action 8.21 Arbuscular Mycorrhizas in Sustainable Soil-Plant-Systems started 19 May 1994 as a new development of the previous COST Action 8.10 This is a report of the 1996 activities. Three major meetings have been organized in 1996, two of which (Canterbury and Budapest) in conjunction with Management Committee Meetings:

- Functional Ecology of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Natural Ecosystems and Future Structure and Development of the European Bank of the Glomales, Canterbury, March, 28-30, 1996;
- Abiotic Stress Alleviation by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, Budapest, September, 19-21, 1996;
- Transport and Metabolism in Arbuscular Mycorrhizas, Roskilde, November, 28-30, 1996.

A Joint Working Group of COST 8.22 and COST 8.21 was held in Pisa (June, 14-15, 1996) devoted to Novel Biotechnical Approaches to Plant Production: from Sterile Root to Mycorrhizosphere. The 1995/96 contribution for COST Short-Term Scientific Missions allowed in 1996 to finance fifteen scientific exchanges between Laboratories active in the COST 8.21 network. work.
