The report describes the work carried out in a 3 year demonstration project and includes a summary of the work involved in the procurement of a twin roll casting plant for the production of hot band equivalent strip product, from the conceptual design phase through to installation and commissioning. Support studies included the design and evaluation of a metal delivery system for the twin roll caster and this incorporates a facility to remove heat from the liquid metal feedstock before it passes into the roll entry. This is achieved by making steel flow over a water-cooled copper distributor, which has the additional benefit of spreading the liquid steel across the full width of the roll entry. Test work carried out on an existing 76 mm wide twin roll casting mill is also reported. Strip samples were the subject of mechanical testing and further processing studies.
