In an ECSC pilot/demonstration programme of several years duration it could be shown, that horizontal casting with an oscillating mould (HOM-TEC-process) is feasible for the production of round and square billets. The most different low and high alloy steels could be cast in sizes from 100 mm square to 200 mm square and from 80 mm round to 200 mm round. The aim of this project was the casting of larger size rectangular blooms in sizes up to 265 mm square. At the same time it was to be tested whether such blooms could be produced on a two-strand caster with synchronously oscillating moulds. The task was successful: 240 mm square blooms of high alloy steels could be cast reliably on a two-strand HOM-TEC production caster. An accelerated secondary cooling system (ASC) developed by Centre de Recherches Métallurgiques (CRM), Liège was tested for its suitability for horizontal casting. After several optimizations it worked well in the horizontal configuration. For advance calculation of process parameters, in collaboration with universities, a study on electromagnetic stirring fields was made and a mathematical model was developed for stationary and non-stationary temperature fields and stress-strain fields in continuously cast strands.
