In the twin roll casting process with different roll diameters, sealing of the gap between the casting nozzle and the rotating lower casting roll is considered as a problem. The investigations made in this connection focus on developing and testing a sealing method by means of electromagnetic forces avoiding any contact of the rotating casting roll and the casting nozzle. A great number of casting tests were made, in order to check the effectiveness of electromagnetic gap sealing. The first casting tests were made by applying this technique, but it was not possible to achieve longer casting times. In the second experimental stage, the single-roll hot model was optimized with respect to gap sealing by means of ceramic fibers as well as to electromagnetic gap sealing. In the third experimental stage, the tests were continued by using the twin-roll hot model. The expectations regarding gap sealing by means of ceramic fibers were fulfilled by the twin-roll hot model. To sum up it can be said that by using electromagnetic gap sealing it was not possible to run the thin strip casting process in a steady manner, whereas good casting results were achieved by using ceramic gap sealing.
