The aim of the project was:

Obtaining knowledge and understanding of the opening behaviour of full-aperture-easy-open-ends;
Developing a steed full-aperture-easy-open-end with the same or even better opening characteristics as an aluminium variant.

The project started with choosing a correct material and material model. Finite element calculations gave an indication of a certain steel type (T61CA and T65CA). The next stage dealt with developing a crack (software) element to be used in the finite element package. A parameter study was done to calculate the different end parameters on the pop and tear force. With the parameter results and by using the crack element all efforts were used to determine an optimum steel Full Aperture Easy-Open End (FAEOE). The final stage was to validate the theoretical work by making a laboratory end with the help of a so-called master tooling. ing.
