  • Investigation of the influence of toughness and crack geometry on the crack extension behaviour of structured steel of different strength based on wide plate tests


In this research project experimental investigations of the distortion and the crack behaviour of high strength low alloyed fine grained steels were performed. The main emphasis was put on the description of the transition behaviours from the brittle to the ductile failure as well as of the crack extension behaviour. With this aim in view fracture mechanic tests on laboratory samples and structural wide plate samples were performed. Based on the results of the small scale experiments existing fracture mechanics safety concepts were examined with the aim of predicting the failure limits of structural plates. Within this aspect of the investigation emphasis was put on the further development and verification of the Eurocode 3, Annex C, and the results were compared to those of other European brittle fracture concepts.
