The design and construction of a pilot plant for the automatic detection of defects and for their classification in main categories was the goal of this project. Research was carried out at ILVA-Terni hot strip annealing and pickling lines, and at UGINE-Guegnon bright annealing line as for stainless steel strip. CSM/ILVA-Terni constructed a proprietary system which is actually operating on line. UGINE/IRSID conducted experiments on line by utilizing a system from a commercial company to conclude on the feasability of an industrial application. The system utilizes specific light source arrangements, charge coupled device (CCD) linescan cameras, and VME-bus based image processing boards. The inspected area is a line along a roll, specifically on a S-block, with speed at up to 1 m/s. Algorithms processing the image and detecting defects calculate optic-geometric parameters in real time. Similar classification procedures are based on statistic algorithms (K nearest neighbours - KNN and reduced coulomb energy - RCE) are carried out off line.
