The main aim of the present project is to establish the bases for the substitution of quenched and tempered steels by microalloyed steels in the as-forged or as-rolled state. This is to be achieved through the acquisition of a better understanding of the influence of a combination of microalloying and thermomechanical treatment, controlling the deformation parameters and the subsequent cooling rates, on the microstructure and consequently on the mechanical properties. Two Ti-V and two Ti steels, all of them industrially cast, have been studied. Grain coarsening temperature measurements on these steels have been carried out. Hot working operations have been simulated in the laboratory using plane strain compression and torsion tests. Fatigue tests, to measure the threshold and crack propagation rates in the Paris zone have been carried out with all the microstructures obtained in the laboratory and the results are similar to those found in other ferrite-pearlite steels. Finally industrial tests for the validation of laboratory results have been carried out.
