Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Our experience of walking has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. In Great Britain between 1971 and 1990 the proportion of 7 and 8 year-old children allowed to go to school on their own dropped from 80% to 9%. Generally increased danger has led parents to curtail their children's freedom. The restriction on children's independent mobility has had serious adverse health effects on them and changed the life of our cities.
