The European Concerted Action COST 503 Powder Metallurgy - Powder based materials was officially approved in 1983 with the following main objectives:

- The organization of European research and development activities in the field of advanced powder metallurgy;
- To initiate collaboration between industry and research institutions;
- The coordination of research activities in the field of powder metallurgy.

The Management Committee of the Action decided to prepare a summary and a critical evaluation of the research activities of COST 503, to be published in five volumes. In this volume are reported the results of investigations on:
- Preparation and characterization of ultra-high purity refractory metals and compounds for microelectronic applications;
- Physical and mechanical properties of technically pure refractory metals summarized for expert readers. The development of processing, testing and analytical procedures is presented with a critical assessment of the achieved results. The data on the physical and mechanical properties of molybdenum are presented in form of a data-bank.
