The European Concerted Action COST 503 Powder Metallurgy - Powder based materials was officially approved in 1983 with the following main objectives:

- The organization of European research and development activities in the field of advanced powder metallurgy;
- To initiate collaboration between industry and research institutions;
- The coordination of research activities in the field of powder metallurgy.

The Management Committee of the Action decided to prepare a summary and a critical evaluation of the research activities of COST 503, to be published in five volumes. Volume IV presents new experimental data on the influence of trace elements in production, recycling and on the final properties of hard metals and cemented carbides are critically reviewed. ewed.
