The work done during the present project has led to a deeper knowledge of the causes that promote a large amount of surface defects during one heat rolling of as-cast continuous casting structures of free-cutting steels. These steels are characterized by their high levels of sulphur and other additions (Pb, Se, Te) in smaller percentages leading to a strong impairment of workability of as-cast structures. The different phases carried out during the research have covered the initial objectives foreseen and they have given a series of conclusions directed at adapting the rolling process (specially billet reheating and ulterior thermal profile evolution of the product) in order to be able to roll these steel grades with an optimum yield rate.
