Significant investment in production plants and in semi-industrial research and development show the main trends of the new thin casting technologies for flat products. As far as the reheating and soaking furnace is concerned, three classes can be identified:

- Strip casting produces a flat strip thinner than 10 mm;
- Thin continuous casting producing a bar between 20 and 40 in thickness;
- Continuous casting for slabs 50 to 70 mm thick slabs according to industrial practices now in full operation.

For the first case (3-10 mm) several possible designs of a passive and active tunnel have been considered by using experimental measurements carried out on the equipment. For the thickness 20 to 40 mm, it is possible to design a roller hearth furnace or a combination roller-walking beam. The present report contains the experimental results of several slabs, before and after the required furnace modifications from mixed use to roller hearth only mode. Furthermore a comparison between different possible solutions is presented with particular reference to the energy consumption. tion.
