Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The decision support system EUPHIDS (EUropean Pesticide Hazard Information and Decision support System) is a powerful instrument for the evaluation of environmental and health effects of pesticides for agricultural use. Regional environmental and human health effects of pesticides are calculated at different administrative levels (Europe, national, regional) by means of maps.
EUPHIDS integrates knowledge and information from various disciplines involved in pesticide risk assessment evaluation in an easy accessible computer environment.
A number of prediction models are included for such phenomena as leaching, run-off, spray-drift, exposure of operators during application, and exposure of the general population through diet.
The pesticide evaluation follows generally accepted guidelines. Besides, a number of evaluation tools beyond these guidelines have been added, namely ecosystem evaluation by means of safety factors or sensitivity distribution methodology, as well as an aggregated evaluation using value functions to weigh different ecosystem risks.
Study areas are (European Union, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Kreis Soest, Parco Sud di Milano, Hupselse Beek). Toxicological and ecotoxicological data for eight pesticides are included. ed.
