Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The growing international concern over the carcinogenic effects of hexavalent chromium, as highlighted in the final report on the research work carried out in the first phase of this investigation, has meant that research into finding alternative pigments that are environmentally acceptable must be intensified. This report presents the results from the second phase of the investigation into suitable alternatives to chromate-containing primers. This study was aimed at extending the knowledge base obtained in the first phase of the programme through:

Continuing the investigation started in phase 1, but including Galvalume and Galfan as substrates and also using chromium-free pretreatments;
Obtaining more results from longer-term outdoor exposure studies for the galvanized steel-based samples tested;
Correlating the longer-term outdoor performance with the accelerated corrosion and electrochemical test results.
