This project has been concerned with the macro assessment of steel cleanness utilizing optical emission spectrometry to measure the atomic emissions produced by electrical or laser excitation. The innovative stage in the procedure has been movement of the sample combined with the measurement of the output from individual excitation events. The data collected have been utilized to differentiate cleanness, provide a qualitative assessment of the composition of inclusion and produce composition contour maps. In addition to the control and data-logging software, data-processing software has been developed which enables the normal extremities of clean and dirty steel to be separated.
