The aim of this investigation was to determine how the current slope in both the dynamic weldability lobe and oscillating weldability lobe is influenced by various welding parameters and to determine the feasibility of using this current slope as the basis of a control algorithm. Various parameters were monitored during the welding trials using custom designed signal conditioning electronics. The measured signals included current, voltage, resistance, rate of current change (toroid output), head displacement, electrode force and head acceleration. The materials used in the welding trials included uncoated mild steel, hot-dip zinc-coated steel (HDZ), hot-dip iron-zinc-alloy-coated steel (IZ) and electrolytically-deposited zinc-coated steel (EZ). All the steels were in the thickness range 0.7 mm to 1.2 mm.
