The research undertaken in this project was to develop chromium-free passivation treatments as alternatives to the chromate-containing solutions currently used. Chromium-free passivation treatments have to meet a range of performance criteria ideally equivalent to, or better than, the existing dichromate treatments and should be capable of application under similar tinning line conditions to those employed for the present treatments, typically a treatment time of about one second. Initial investigations were based on a laboratory treatment procedure in which selected treatments were applied in a static cell simulating tinning line conditions and assessed using a range of tests. Investigations were then concentrated on the production and testing of passivated tin plate produced on the Hoogovens pilot tinning line facility to assess the performance of three treatments using current tin- plate production technology.
