A research programme has been carried out to determine the influence of conventional stress corrosion test techniques and small amplitude cyclic stresses on threshold stress intensity for stress corrosion cracking in static loading (K(ISCC)). Five steel/environment systems of significant practical relevance and widely different behaviour were chosen for study. These included a strong hydrogen charging environment, a system in which the mechanism is considered to be grain boundary dissolution, and three steels ranging in behaviour from immunity to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) to highly susceptible to SCC.
