Monitoring of a single stand of a five-stand cold reduction mill established the dominant third octave frequencies that can lead to destructive vibration. Model analysis of the roll stack and structure indicated suitable positions for the active damping application on the top back-up chocks. A test rig was designed and manufactured to enable mechanical and electrical control parameters to be established. The final design of the seismic dampers utilized a specially designed high frequency hydraulic actuator that could be mounted on the back-up chocks before they were installed in the mill stand. The design of the active dampers is suitable for any single stand or multistand four-high strip rolling mill.
