This work concerns the development of inspection systems for automatic recognition and analysis of surface defects in flat steel products. British Steel Technical concentrated on the automation of a system currently operational at their hot strip mills. Images from the on-line monitoring system were evaluated and features which were potentially useful for defect detection and identification selected. Consideration was also given to determining how the inspector detects and identifies defects and what information he uses in addition to the video images. The image collection system was interfaced with the current inspection equipment and the mill process computer so that images of the strip surface could be stored for further analysis. At the same time information on process and product variables was collected. These images were subjected to various pre-processing techniques in order to make the data more amenable to subsequent feature extraction and segmentation operations.
